The junta in charge of the Niger Republic has agreed to meet with representatives from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in an effort to talk through the country’s political dilemma.
On Sunday, members of Nigeria’s Intervention Team—experts representing all the major Islamic denominations in the country—released a statement saying as much.
ECOWAS’s demand that former President Bazoum be reinstated was discussed at length during the team’s weekend meeting with coup leader General Abdourahmane Tchiani.
According to ThisDay, on Sunday, Bala Lau released a statement saying that the team had been to Niger at the request of President Bola Tinubu.
In order to persuade General Tchiani and the other military officials behind the coup to take the route of peace rather than conflict, he explained to him that the purpose of his trip to Niger was to have a productive conversation along those lines.
General Tchiani, who had greeted the team with open arms, expressed his appreciation for their help in a reply.
When asked how the situation could be resolved, he stated, “Our doors were open to explore diplomacy and peace. It hurt that the ECOWAS leaders didn’t consider our perspective before issuing the resignation order.
He went on to say that the coup’s intentions were honorable and that they acted quickly to prevent harm to both the Niger Republic and Nigeria.
The coup commander admitted that his group had been unhappy about the ECOWAS ultimatum and had not paid enough attention to the delegation dispatched by President Tinubu.
