The member representing Surulere 1 Federal Constituency and Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, has attributed Wednesday’s tragic accident at Ojuelegba area of Lagos State to negligence.
The lawmaker said the tragedy was avoidable.
Gbajabiamila, who expressed sadness over the death of the victims, said this in a series of tweets on his official Twitter handle on Thursday.
Three people were killed on Wednesday after a container on a 40-feet trailer fell off the Ojuelegba Bridge onto the road below landing on some vehicles.
The majority leader called for a legislation that would prevent such tragedy in the future, adding that negligence on the part of trailer drivers in Lagos should be criminalised while those found culpable should face the wrath of the law.
Gbajabiamila said, “The tragedy that occurred in my constituency when a trailer fell over a bridge, crushing people to an untimely death was avoidable.
“The act of negligence of trailer drivers must be criminalised and people found to be culpable should be held accountable for their negligence.
“It is now time for a legislation or regulation that will prevent such occurrences in the future. I pray that the soul of the departed rest in peace”.
Meanwhile, the Divisional Police Officer of the Surulere Police Division, CSP Monday Agbonika, has effected the arrest of the driver of the trailer whose name was given as Wasiu Adeleke.
