Senate President, Chief Godswill Akpabio, has stated that Nigeria’s economy was already in a critical state before President Bola Tinubu assumed office in 2023.
Speaking during his Constituency Briefing and Empowerment event held in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, on Monday, Akpabio emphasized that Tinubu was committed to fixing the economy and improving the lives of Nigerians, regardless of their ethnic, religious, or political affiliations.
He said, “President Tinubu met a very bad condition on ground. Nobody envied him, but he is determined to change the situation. Let us encourage him to do so.

We believe that, at the end of the day, he will move the country forward. He did it in Lagos before, and he will do it again in Nigeria. Just give him time, and he will take us to our El Dorado.”
The senator representing Akwa Ibom North West further revealed a conversation he had with the president, saying, “I once asked him, ‘Mr. President, after becoming president and seeing the state of the economy left behind, are you excited?’ He replied, ‘Well, I’m determined to change the situation.’”
Akpabio highlighted Tinubu’s efforts in empowering Nigerians through various constituency projects and the establishment of regional commissions aimed at development.
He also commended the president’s commitment to the South East, pointing out key achievements such as signing the South East Development Commission into law and allocating critical ministries to address the region’s challenges.
“The president has shown the South East love by signing the South East Development Commission into an act of parliament.
Key ministries have been allocated based on the region’s needs, not votes. For instance, the Ministry of Works has been given to the South East to address ecological problems and poor road infrastructure, just like in the South South.
Akwa Ibom, which sits on vast gas reserves, has also benefited, and the state now produces the third citizen of the country, the Senate President,” Akpabio said.
He lauded Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for fostering peace in the state, noting that peace is essential for development. “Without peace, there will be no development.
The governor has embraced all Akwa Ibom people irrespective of political lines, even during Christmas celebrations,” he added.
