In the highly anticipated Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings for 2024, Nigeria boasts two universities within the coveted top 1,000 institutions worldwide.
Covenant University and the University of Ibadan share this distinction, securing positions in the 800-1,000 range. This achievement underscores Nigeria’s presence on the global academic map.
Notably, the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) follow closely as the second-highest-ranked universities in the country, earning places in the 1001-1200 bracket.
Nigeria’s academic landscape shines even brighter as a total of seven universities achieve top 1,500 status on the global stage.

However, a surprising twist unfolds among Nigeria’s top 10 universities. In a year filled with changes, the University of Lagos experienced a notable drop, slipping from the 401–500 band to the 1001–1200 tier. This shift cost the institution its title as the best-ranked university in the nation, which it previously shared with the University of Ibadan. Furthermore, the University of Ibadan also faced a significant decline, falling from the 401–500 range last year to the 801–1000 band in 2024.
In the 20th edition of these prestigious rankings, a remarkable total of 1,904 universities, an increase from 1,799 last year, hailing from 108 countries and regions, have been meticulously evaluated.
Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings for 2024 provide the most comprehensive, rigorous, and balanced assessment of research-intensive universities, covering 18 performance indicators that encompass their fundamental missions of teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international engagement.
