As Nigeria approaches its 64th Independence Day celebration, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has called on citizens not to lose hope despite the country’s numerous challenges, including broken promises, exploitation, and pervasive corruption.
NLC President Joe Ajaero made the appeal in a statement on Monday, where he commended Nigerian workers for their resilience and sacrifice, despite what he described as betrayal by the nation’s political leaders.
“We urge the downtrodden Nigerians who bear the marks or burden of these broken promises, exploitation, and corruption to not give up hope on their country,” Ajaero said.

His message comes ahead of Nigeria’s annual commemoration of its liberation from colonial rule on October 1, 1960.
While the country celebrates its independence, many Nigerians continue to face economic difficulties, with high inflation, rising energy costs, infrastructural deficits, inadequate electricity supply, and a currency crisis in the foreign exchange market remaining persistent issues.
Despite these challenges, Ajaero praised Nigerian workers for their unyielding spirit, emphasising their role in sustaining the nation’s economy through difficult times.
The NLC’s statement reflects growing concerns about the country’s direction post-independence, but the organisation urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and continue pushing for better governance and accountability.
As Nigeria marks its 64th year of independence, the call for reform and improved leadership remains central to the aspirations of many citizens across the country.
