Nollywood Movies Lack Quality – Sola Fosudo

Veteran actor, Sola Fosudo, has criticized the low quality of Nollywood movies, stating that has been the main reason why he does not patronise them.

Fosudo, who has taken a break off acting observed that most films produced in Nigeria, are usually a replica of a foreign movie modified to have a new look.

He lamented in interview with Punch News about the high level of non-professionalism exhibited by directors, who are mainly amateurs without the technical or academic knowledge about film production.

This, according to him has contributed to the poor quality of the Nigerian movie industry.

“I don’t watch Nollywood movies anymore because most of them are re-packaged stories.”

“Sometimes, they see an interesting foreign movie and they try to localise it but in the process, they bastardise the whole thing. You will find out that most of the stories are not original.”

“If people who are not trained in a particular trade populate the trade, there would be development problem. But if they come as supporting personnel and allow the trained people take the centre stage, then development and growth would be integrated.”#

He made his point by comparing the expected level of performance of a professional who is unfamiliar with an industry to someone who was trained in such a line.

According to the actor, the latter would show more propensity to create in comparison to the other.

“For instance, in the banking industry, most of the people there studied related courses that would make them function properly in their duties.”

“If there are other people coming, like those who studied Geography, Yoruba, etc, they would not allow them to fill some positions.”

“They would come in as supporting personnel and begin to get in-house training which would eventually make them masters of their craft if they want to remain in the industry.”

“But here, you find some people come in overnight and they become star actors, some of them would become directors and producers within six months.”

“The quality of what they bring out would be questionable. If you get adequate training, you would understand what you are doing because you have studied it in theory so when you want to apply it, it would be done based on knowledge not on intuition or penchant.”

“There is a difference between trained actors and the untrained ones,” Fosudo said.

There are many who would argue with the actor’s position, having seen the current development in the movie industry.

Movie director and actor like Kunle Afolayan has raised the bar concerning how films should be projected.

This is led to active participation of foreign actors in local home videos such as was seen in Bolanle Austen-Peters’ produced movie, “93 Days”, which featured Danny Glover.
