The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has condemned what it described as a “reckless and violent” statement made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, against Channels Television journalist, Seun Okinbaloye.
Wike, during a media chat last week, reportedly said he could have broken his television screen and shot the journalist over comments concerning the dangers of a one-party system.

In a statement signed by its National President, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the NUJ described the remark as a direct attempt to intimidate and silence the press, warning that it undermines press freedom and democratic principles.
The union said it had initially delayed responding, expecting the minister to retract or apologise for the statement, but noted that the absence of any such action suggests the comment was deliberate.
“This calculated silence deepens our concern and reinforces the perception that the threat was intentional,” the statement read.
The NUJ added that the comment, coming from a high-ranking government official, creates fear among journalists and sends a dangerous signal that critical reporting could attract hostility.
“It sends a message that critical reporting will be met with threats of violence, which is antithetical to a free and open society,” the union said.
The body demanded an immediate and unreserved apology from Wike, while also calling on the Federal Government to condemn the remark and reaffirm its commitment to press freedom.
It further urged media organisations, civil society groups and democracy advocates to stand in solidarity against what it described as an attack on the independence of the media.
“The safety and security of journalists are paramount to a healthy democracy, and any attempt to stifle their voices must be met with a unified response,” the NUJ stated.
