Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged Nigerians to embrace the spirit of selfless service as a guiding principle for national development. Speaking at a public event held in Ogun State, the elder statesman emphasized that true progress can only be achieved when citizens, especially leaders, prioritize collective good over personal gain.
Obasanjo, who has remained a vocal figure in Nigeria’s socio-political discourse since leaving office, called on both public office holders and private individuals to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s growth by placing service above self-interest. According to him, the current challenges facing the country — ranging from insecurity and economic hardship to weak institutions — can be addressed more effectively if individuals are driven by the desire to serve rather than to profit.

“The key to building a better Nigeria lies in our commitment to selfless service,” he said. “It means doing what is right, not what is convenient. It means thinking of the next generation, not just the next election or the next contract.”
The former president reflected on his years in public office, noting that decisions driven by a sense of duty often yield long-term benefits, even if they are unpopular at the moment. He encouraged young Nigerians to participate actively in nation-building, warning that apathy and cynicism will only delay the country’s progress.
He also lamented the erosion of values in leadership and the growing culture of impunity in public service, describing it as a threat to Nigeria’s democratic foundations. “We must restore integrity and accountability in our institutions,” he said. “It starts with individuals choosing to serve with honesty and dedication.”
Obasanjo’s remarks come at a time when public confidence in political leadership is low, and many citizens are grappling with daily struggles tied to unemployment, inflation, and declining public services. His call for selflessness is seen by many as a timely reminder of the moral compass required to steer the country away from its current challenges.
He also used the occasion to commend Nigerians who, despite economic difficulties, continue to engage in community service, volunteer work, and advocacy. According to him, these unsung heroes form the backbone of any nation aspiring to greatness.
“Nigeria is blessed with talented and resilient people,” he added. “If more of us channel our energy toward the common good, rather than personal enrichment, this country will rise to its true potential.”
The former president urged educational institutions, religious bodies, and civic organizations to promote values such as honesty, discipline, and public-mindedness from an early age. He noted that building a culture of service requires deliberate effort and should be embedded into the nation’s moral and civic education frameworks.
Obasanjo’s message was well received by many attendees, including youth leaders, traditional rulers, civil society actors, and government officials present at the event. Several speakers echoed his sentiments, adding that Nigeria’s journey toward prosperity must begin with a change in mindset and the rediscovery of shared national purpose.
As the country faces mounting socio-economic pressures, the call for selfless service by a prominent former leader like Obasanjo adds to the growing discourse on values-based leadership and national responsibility. While the road ahead may be challenging, his words serve as a reminder that transformation is possible when individuals choose to act not out of selfish ambition, but out of a sincere desire to serve.
