Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has said the presidential candidates of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, lack the grassroots support and regional appeal required to defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
Ganduje made the remarks on Monday during a public event in Kano, where he assessed the political landscape ahead of the next presidential poll.
According to the former APC chairman, Northern Nigeria remains a decisive factor in presidential elections, insisting that neither Obi nor Atiku possesses the political structure needed to mobilise sufficient support in the region.
“The North is strategic in every presidential election in Nigeria. With due respect to our friends in the opposition, neither Peter Obi nor Atiku Abubakar can mobilise enough support in this region to defeat President Tinubu in 2027,” he said.
Ganduje also expressed concern over the increasing number of political parties in the country, urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to tighten the requirements for party registration.
He argued that only political parties with functional structures, clear ideologies and a broad national presence should be recognised by the electoral body.
The former Kano State governor maintained that opposition parties face significant challenges in building the nationwide support needed to unseat the ruling APC in the next election.
His comments come amid ongoing political realignments and consultations among opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
