Nigerian forward, Odion Ighalo, continued his superb scoring run for Watford in the Barclays Premier League when he netted against English champions Chelsea on Boxing Day.
The 26-year-old scored on 56 minutes as Watford clawed their way from a goal down to lead 2-1 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
Ighalo stood up to Chelsea defender Gary Cahill and at times made life difficult for the English centre-back during the match.
Chelsea got their noses in front through Diego Costa’s volley from close range on 32 minutes before Troy Deeney converted from the spot to level the game at 1-1 just close to the break after Nemanja Matic handled the ball inside his box.
Despite the introduction of his Nigerian international teammate, John Obi Mikel, by Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink, it was Ighalo who stole the headlines inside Stamford Bridge.
The former Udinese man twisted and turned inside the Chelsea box with Chelsea legs left stretching and stretching before he fired left-footed towards goal and with a stroke of luck his effort was deflected past a despairing Thibaut Courtois in goal.
The Nigerian’s goal led to Chelsea peppering the Hornets and they got their reward on 65 minutes when Costa levelled matters and that was as much as the game produced in terms of goal-scoring.
Ighalo has now scored 13 goals in 18 appearances for the Hornets this season. He has also weighed in with two assists.
The Nigerian has a record of 115.5 minutes per goal in the English top-flight this term.
