Road traffic crashes are undesirable happenings in the society and must be tackled with every available means to ensure reduction.
Executive Director of a Non Governmental Organisation, Fund for Global Health (FGH), Mr. Ernest Loevinsohn, made this submission in Abeokuta at a road safety meeting with the Senior Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Transportation, Barrister Gbenga Opesanwo and officials of the State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) at Abeokuta.
According to him, Ogun State occupied a strategic location as it is a gateway to other States of the Federation and shares international boundary with Benin Republic, a situation which could result into serious traffic challenges.
Mr. Loevinsohn said his organisation was ready to partner with TRACE, the State government’s traffic management outfit to reduce road traffic deaths to the barest minimum.
He said in this regard, the NGO would engage in training and provide gadgets like Speed Detectors, Alcolyser and Radar Guns on roads identified as black spots in the State to control drivers’ speed and other negative attitude on the roads.
Responding, Opesanwo said the NGO’s collaboration on steps to reduce deaths on the road was a welcome development which apart from complementing government’s efforts on road safety would also boost the State’s economy.
He said government was ready to partner with organisations with developmental ideas that could enhance efforts at reducing carnages on the roads, adding that attitudinal change of the motoring public on better driving culture would help realise the value of infrastructural development that government was working on in the State.
Speaking in the same vein, the Corps Commander of TRACE, Ayodele Sangofadeji affirmed that the body would provide all technical inputs needed to ensure the successful implementation of the project, expressing optimism that the training and installation of gadgets to be done by the NGO would help in restoring sanity on the roads.
