The Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker, has during a press briefing in commemoration of the World AIDS Day stated that close to 20,827 have HIV in the state.

The World AIDS Day which is globally celebrated is tagged “United to end AIDS in the midst of COVID – 19”. The Commissioner stated that Ogun State has the highest prevalence of HIV in the South-West.
The commissioner, who was duly represented by the Permanent Secretary, Hospital Management Board, Dr Nafiu Aigoro, stated that the 20,827 patients who have HIV have been been placed on Antiretroviral Treatment to control the disease.
In her words, the Commissioner stated that the first HIV case recorded in Ogun State was reported in 1990. After the first prevalent case, HIV/AIDS zero-prevalence sentinel survey was carried out in 1999 ; which revealed the prevalence rate to be 2.5%.
The prevalence rate in 2001, was 3.5%; in 2003 it was 1.5% and in 2005 it was 3.6; In 2008, it was 1.7 percent; in 2010, it was 3.1%; in 2012 it was 2.9% and presently the prevalence rate is 1.6%.
