Dr Doyin Okupe, former Director-General of Peter Obi’s Presidential Campaign Organisation and a seasoned political strategist, has criticised those attacking him for endorsing President Bola Tinubu’s economic recovery plan, labelling his critics as misguided and uninformed.
Okupe, who previously served as a Presidential Spokesperson, addressed the backlash in a statement made in Lagos on Monday, urging Nigerians to rise above partisan divisions for the greater good of the nation.
Following his public support for some of the current administration’s policies, Okupe has faced a barrage of criticism, particularly on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

Some Nigerians have accused him of betraying his former allies, with many resorting to insults and derogatory remarks.
In response, Okupe dismissed these criticisms, referring to his detractors as “political urchins” who lack the understanding and experience necessary to grasp the complexities of national governance.
Okupe emphasised that his support for President Tinubu’s economic policies does not stem from political loyalty, but from a broader vision for Nigeria’s future.
“The project of Nigeria is bigger than any individual or political party,” he stated. Okupe argued that Nigeria’s challenges require a collective effort, transcending political affiliations, to ensure progress and stability for future generations.
He called for a unified approach to governance, where constructive criticism is valued over divisive rhetoric.
He further elaborated, “Except we join hands together to move this country forward, we will be doing the future generations a huge disservice and adding to the sufferings of the masses.
The Nigeria project belongs to all of us irrespective of the political party and political leader in power. We must, with all sense of patriotism, support whoever God has chosen by His supreme providence to lead.”
Okupe’s remarks reflect his belief in a cooperative political culture, where electoral outcomes are respected, and leaders are held accountable through constructive engagement rather than perpetual conflict.
Okupe also lamented the lack of historical knowledge among his critics, particularly young Nigerians who, he feels, are disconnected from the country’s complex political landscape.
He noted, “Many young Nigerians who are quick to abuse elders lack a comprehensive understanding of Nigeria’s political history and challenges. Their criticisms are often based on superficial judgments rather than informed opinions.
Okupe stressed the importance of patience and understanding in democratic processes, advocating for a more mature and informed public discourse.
Having resigned from the Labour Party, Okupe remains steadfast in his decision to support policies that he believes are in the best interest of the nation, regardless of political affiliations.
He reminded critics that his support for Peter Obi during the presidential campaign was a matter of personal conviction, undertaken without expectations of personal gain.
Okupe revealed that he had a mutual agreement with Obi, wherein he would not serve in his government if Obi won the presidency.
This decision, he clarified, was made to maintain his independence and to offer his guidance from a position of elder statesmanship.
Okupe’s decision to support President Tinubu’s economic recovery plan underscores his commitment to Nigeria’s progress.
He argued that the nation’s economic challenges, such as inflation, unemployment, and infrastructural decay, require a pragmatic approach, which includes supporting initiatives that could potentially steer the country towards stability and growth.
By backing the current administration’s efforts, Okupe hopes to contribute positively to the nation’s recovery, even if it means facing criticism from those who disagree with his stance.
Furthermore, Okupe called on Nigerians to embrace a culture of constructive criticism, which he believes is essential for the survival of true democracy.
He urged citizens to channel their energies into holding the government accountable in a manner that is respectful and based on factual evidence rather than emotional or partisan biases.
“After elections, we must sheath our swords, criticise government constructively and patiently wait till the next election.
That is the culture of true and enduring democracy,” Okupe stated.
In closing, Okupe reiterated his commitment to Nigeria, stressing that his actions are driven by a desire to see the nation succeed.
He expressed hope that Nigerians would come together to support policies that aim to uplift the country, irrespective of the party in power. Okupe’s message is clear: Nigeria’s future hinges on unity, cooperation, and a collective resolve to overcome the challenges that lie ahead.
As he continues to advocate for these values, Okupe remains an outspoken voice for national cohesion and progress, urging all Nigerians to put the nation first.
