The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in 16 out of the 18 local government chairmanship seats contested during the council elections in Ondo State.
The Chairman of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC), Joseph Aeemo, announced the results on Sunday at the commission’s headquarters in Akure.
Aeemo noted that the election in Ondo West Local Government Area was rescheduled, while results from Owo Local Government Area were still being awaited.

Reports revealed that 12 political parties participated in Saturday’s election, including the Action Alliance (AA), Action Democratic Party (ADP), Action People’s Party (APP), All Progressives Congress (APC), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Boot Party (BP), and Labour Party (LP). Others included the National Rescue Party (NRP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Young Progressive Party (YPP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).
However, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) boycotted the election, citing a lack of trust in ODIEC’s ability to conduct a credible poll.
Before the election, the last local government council poll in Ondo State was conducted on August 23, 2020.
The tenure of those elected officials ended on August 22, 2023, leaving the administration of the 18 local government areas in the hands of civil servants, specifically the Heads of Local Government Administrations.
After several postponements, ODIEC finally held the election on January 18, 2025.
The resounding victory for the APC solidifies the party’s dominance in the state, even as concerns over voter turnout and the PDP’s absence continue to spark debates about the election’s credibility.
