The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the state following escalating political tensions that reportedly led to multiple deaths on Monday.
However, the state government has rejected the APC’s demand, accusing the opposition party of orchestrating violence to justify its call for emergency rule.
The debate unfolded during an appearance on Politics Today, a Channels Television program, featuring APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, and Osun State Commissioner for Information, Kolapo Alimi.

Senator Basiru, when asked for a solution to the ongoing political crisis, stated, “I will suggest that perhaps it will be necessary for the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency.
It has gotten to that stage where hapless people coming from farms are attacked by uncontrollable PDP thugs.”
In response, Alimi strongly opposed the call, saying, “I call on our amiable President to reject the call of Honourable Bashiru and his cohorts.
That is exactly what they are targeting—they deliberately caused mayhem in this state. We are going to publish the names of our members that have been killed.
There is no Court of Appeal that restored them; we urge them to toe the line of peace.”
The crisis erupted as reinstated local government chairmen and councillors, claiming to enforce a court ruling, attempted to resume office across the state’s 30 local government councils.
Their takeover efforts met resistance in several areas, including Osogbo, Ikire, and Irewole, leading to violent clashes.
Among the casualties was a reinstated council chairman, Remi Abbas.
In response to the violence, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has ordered the deployment of additional tactical squads to Osun State to strengthen security and restore order.
The police condemned the unrest, pledging to bring those responsible to justice.
