The Osun State government has reiterated its decision not to reverse the dismissal of certain traditional rulers, despite opposition from some quarters
This statement was made by the spokesperson to the governor, Olawale Rasheed, in response to claims suggesting a potential reversal of the government’s stance. Rasheed clarified the government’s position in a statement obtained by the media in Osogbo on Friday.
The government’s White Paper, released on Thursday, had nullified the selection processes that led to the appointment of the Aree of Iree and the Owa of Igbajo.
It also declared the stool of Akirun of Ikirun vacant, pending the determination of a suit before the Court of Appeal.
Rasheed addressed the misinformation circulating about a possible reconsideration of these decisions, stating, “There is no truth in the report, and it should be regarded as the handiwork of beneficiaries of illegality perpetrated by the previous administration.”
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the decisions outlined in the White Paper, emphasizing that they were based on due process, the rule of law, and the customs and traditions of the people.
Meanwhile, the Owa Oke-Ode Ruling Houses of Igbajo have expressed their opposition to the nullification of the selection process that led to the appointment of Oba Adegboyega Famodun as the Owa of Igbajoland.
In a unanimous resolution following an emergency meeting, they argued that the re-selection order by the state government contradicted the customs and traditions of Igbajo.
The resolutions, signed by High Chief Adewumi Taiwo and Prince Adeniyi Adeyemo, among others, asserted that due process was followed in selecting Oba Philip Adegboyega Famodun as the authentic Owa of Igbajo in November 22, 2022.
They further stated that the installation of the Owa of Igbajo cannot be reversed, as the traditional rites cannot be performed twice.
The group also highlighted ongoing legal challenges to the appointment, urging the government to respect the town’s peace and traditions.
The conflicting views between the state government and the Owa Oke-Ode Ruling Houses of Igbajo underscore the complexity of traditional leadership and the adherence to customs and legal processes in Osun State.
