In a significant political shift, no fewer than 1,331 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Dawakin Tofa, the hometown of the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, have defected to the ruling New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano State.
The defectors, who are primarily from 11 wards in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area, pledged to work against the APC’s return to power in the state.
Among the notable figures who switched allegiance were former Vice Chairman of Dawakin Tofa Local Government, Malam Isyaku Dahiru Kwa, former state House of Assembly aspirant Hon. Audu Magaji Tumfafi, and APC Youth Leader for Takai Organisation, Bashir Musa Sani.

During a grand reception held in Dawakin Tofa to welcome the new NNPP members, State Chairman of the party, Alhaji Hashimu Sulaiman Dungurawa, lauded the defectors for their bold decision to leave APC.
He commended the group for showing resilience and loyalty to the NNPP’s vision under the leadership of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Isyaku Dahiru Kwa revealed that their main reason for leaving the APC was Ganduje’s failure to bring development to Dawakin Tofa during his eight-year tenure as governor of Kano State. Kwa also questioned Ganduje’s ability to manage the affairs of the APC at the national level.
In his remarks, Dungurawa assured the defectors that they would be treated with equal respect and opportunities within the NNPP, dispelling rumours of any mass defection from the party back to the APC.
“We have heard about claims from Abuja that some NNPP members are defecting to the APC.
Let me make it clear that after reviewing our membership roll, there has been no noticeable reduction in our numbers,” Dungurawa said.
He further advised the APC’s national leadership to be cautious of individuals pretending to defect for financial gain, adding, “Some people are simply collecting public funds under the guise of defecting from NNPP to APC.”
Dungurawa concluded by reaffirming the NNPP’s commitment to driving socio-economic and infrastructural development in Kano State under the leadership of Senator Kwankwaso.
