Over 5,000 delegates have gathered to elect 39 new executive members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano, marking a significant step toward resolving decades of internal disputes that have hindered the party’s leadership.
The congress, held at the Sabon Gari Pillars Stadium on Saturday, was inaugurated by Halilu Abubakar Mazagari, chairman of the party’s national electoral panel.
He emphasized the party’s commitment to a peaceful and transparent election, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other key stakeholders actively involved.
Addressing concerns about internal party conflicts, Mazagari described the disputes as normal for a large political organization like the PDP.
However, he expressed optimism that the election of new leaders would foster unity and strengthen the party’s structure.
“This congress we are conducting is rancour-free, and by God’s grace, by 2027, Nigerians will elect PDP representatives at both state and federal levels,” Mazagari stated.
Meanwhile, Senator Bello Hayatou Gwarzo, the PDP’s Deputy National Chairman (Northwest), denied any ongoing internal crises, insisting that the party remains united.
“We are one family coming together to elect credible leaders under the watchful eyes of INEC officials and security agencies,” he said.
Gwarzo also expressed confidence in the PDP’s prospects for the 2027 elections, saying, “As the Deputy Chairman for the Northwest, I am fully assured that our party will take over the helm of affairs in the country.”
Key positions up for contest in the election include Chairman, Organizing Secretary, and Ex-officio (male and female) for Kano South.
