Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund has called up Matthew Pattison of Bidvest Wits to replace the injured Jabulani Shongwe in the squad to play the Orange CAF African Nations Championship (South Africa 2014).
Shongwe injured his groin in Bafana Bafana’s 1-0 win over National First Division side Milano United FC in a practice match on Tuesday, 7 January 2014.
“It is never good to lose any player, especially through injury but I am sad to say Shongwe will no longer be a part of us for this tournament due to a tear that won’t heal on time for the tournament. So we have had to withdraw him from the squad.
“But I believe I have found a perfect replacement in Pattison. Unfortunately, injuries are part of the game and we have to soldier on,” said Igesund.
The 27-year Pattison, who has two international caps, is expected in the South Africa’s camp on Wednesday afternoon (8 January).
