The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for the prosecution of a local government council chairman in Imo State over alleged inciting remarks against opposition parties.
The party accused the council boss of making statements capable of provoking political tension and threatening the peaceful participation of opposition supporters in the state.
PDP urged security and law enforcement agencies to investigate the alleged remarks and, where necessary, prosecute the council chairman in accordance with the law.
The opposition party said political office holders have a responsibility to promote peace and tolerance rather than make statements that could encourage hostility against political opponents.
It also called on the Imo State Government to caution public officials against using their positions to intimidate or threaten members of opposition parties.
The PDP maintained that all political actors should be allowed to participate freely in democratic activities without fear of harassment or intimidation.
The party urged security agencies to remain impartial and ensure that political disputes are handled within the confines of the law.
It further appealed to its members and supporters to remain calm and avoid retaliatory actions, stressing that any grievances should be addressed through appropriate legal channels.
The PDP said the alleged remarks should not be ignored, arguing that early intervention by relevant authorities would help prevent political tensions from escalating.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful democratic engagement and urged all stakeholders in Imo State to respect the rights of political opponents.
