Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have ordered warring factions within the party to revert to the status quo in a bid to restore unity.
The directive was issued by the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, following a meeting of the governors that concluded in the early hours of Tuesday.
Speaking after the meeting, Mohammed acknowledged that internal disputes are inevitable in political parties but assured that the challenges within the PDP would be resolved amicably.
“There is no crisis. The governors, Board of Trustees (BoT), and the National Assembly caucus have agreed that the National Working Committee (NWC) should revert to the status quo,” Mohammed said.
He further announced that all recent suspensions within the party had been nullified.
This implies that the NWC must reinstate the suspended officers while retaining Umar Damagum as the acting national chairman.
Confirming the resolution, Damagum expressed optimism about the party’s unity. “The party is united, and no member of the NWC had ever left,” he said.
The directive comes after a Federal High Court in Abuja, on Friday, issued an order restraining the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) from removing Damagum as acting national chairman.
The court’s decision followed a series of suspension and counter-suspension actions that had caused turmoil within the party.
With the intervention of the governors, the PDP now aims to put an end to the crisis and restore stability.
