Pedestrians on Monday urged the Lagos State Government (LASG) to strengthen its enforcement on the adherence of motorists to `pedestrian crossings’ or `zebra crossings’, in busy areas of the Lagos metropolis.
.
The pedestrians made the plea in interviews in Lagos.
.
They advised the state government to come up with stiff penalties for motorists that failed to observe the road signs.
.
According to the pedestrians, motorists must be enlightened regularly on the benefits of adhering to the signs.
.
A sportsman, Toheeb Ariyo, said that most motorists plying the National Stadium road always violated the law.
.
“I use to think that most of these drivers undergo training amt the Driver’s institutes before being licenced, but their attitude to zebra crossing signs have showed their level of ignorance.
.
“At the stadium here, drivers flagrantly violate the sign and zoom off to beat the traffic lights, “ Ariyo said.
.
Another sportman, Segun Abioye, said that most of the drivers were not well educated about the signs.
.
“Only a few of them observe the signs and even the few are not usually as patient as they ought to be,” Abioye said.
.
A special athlete, Ugochukwu Emmanuel, lamented the negligence of motorists at zebra crossings.
.
“Even when these drivers are aware of our challenges, they still find it difficult to wait a minute or two for us to cross the roads.
.
“It will be good if the government revives its enforcement of the signs,” Emmanuel said.
.
Mrs Aduke Rahmon, a commuter at the Falomo area of Lagos, said that many drivers deliberately failed to observe the signs because they were in a hurry.
.
A self-employed, Mr Remi Olaleye, said that the neglect of the signs by motorists had resulted into a lot of casualties.
.
“Government has neglected enforcement of the signs and many people have been injured, including school pupils. Government should begin to compel motorists to comply,” Olaleye said.
.
Another commuter, Mr Gabriel Ogunwande said,“ if you don’t look well before you cross at zebra crossings, you could just be hit or even crushed by fast-moving vehicles.’’
.
Motorists are expected to stop for pedestrians to cross the road whenever they step on the zebra crossing signs, but many pedestrians have noted a lax in its enforcement, in recent times.
