A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Showunmi, has stated that Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), stands a stronger chance of becoming Nigeria’s president if he returns to the PDP.
Speaking on the Mic On Show podcast, Showunmi praised Obi’s political appeal and mass following, but emphasized the need for him to align with a more established political platform to actualize his ambition.
“Peter Obi has all it takes to become president, but he needs to belong to a more structured political party,” he said.

According to Showunmi, Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, has the numbers to secure victory not only in the South East but also in the South-South, the Christian North, and the North Central regions.
“If his numbers and the animated energy that is following him were to follow him into the PDP and he is the presidential candidate, I can guarantee you Peter would take the Southeast, Peter would take the South-South, Peter would take the Christian North, and Peter would take the North Central,” he asserted.
Peter Obi had defected from the PDP to the Labour Party in the lead-up to the 2023 general election, where he contested against Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP. Obi won 12 states, including Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), but was ultimately declared runner-up, with Tinubu emerging as the winner, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Showunmi urged Obi to consider rejoining the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing that such a move could greatly increase his chances of clinching the presidency.
