Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho led his depleted squad into Carrington again before revealing Phil Jones and Chris Smalling could miss the rest of the season.
But Wayne Rooney is back for Manchester United after missing out on the England squad with injury.
The two central defenders left the England camp having picked up problems, Jones’s toe injury caused by Smalling himself.
Both could have played their last games of the campaign, a bitter blow for Jose Mourinho who has to contend with a fixture pile-up in April.
Smalling’s issue is thought to be in his calf and the United boss admitted he is unsure when Paul Pogba will return from a hamstring injury.
‘Clearly the two English boys are long-term injuries,’ Mourinho said. ‘Pogba I have no idea. They’re not important, the important ones are the ones that are ready to play, that’s the way we have to think.
‘We cannot be here crying or thinking about the players who are not available to play. You know Zlatan (Ibrahimovic) and (Ander) Herrera are suspended, you know Herrera’s two-match ban for that episode against Chelsea.
‘You know what happened in the English national team with Smalling and Jones, we know that we have also Pogba injured but I repeat they’re not important, the important ones are the players that are ready to play, I trust and are going to fight for us.’
