The position of substantive Inspector General of Police and Head of the Nigeria Police Force has been confirmed to be held by the former acting IGP, Kayode Egbetokun.
This was done by the National Police Service Council.
Following the conclusion of the Council Meeting, the Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Geidam, briefed the State House media on the announcement that Kayode Egbetokun had been confirmed to serve as the substantive Inspector General of Police.

Geidam further stated that members agreed with President Tinubu’s recommendation about the confirmation of Egbetokun as a result of his impeccable credentials and extensive work experience.
According to him, Egbetokun’s confirmation comes as a result of his performing his responsibilities admirably throughout the course of the previous three months following his appointment on June 20.
Geidam went on to say that the IGP, who has been serving in an acting capacity for the past four months since his appointment, showed excellent records that revealed his multiple police and security developmental programs, establishing him as highly qualified. Geidam made this statement after saying that the IGP had been working in an acting capacity since his appointment.
On Monday, June 19, 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced that he had appointed Egbetokun to the position of IGP.
On April 6, 2021, a new IGP took the place of Usman Baba, who had been nominated to that position by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Since Egbetokun joined the Nigeria Police Force on March 3, 1990, he would have completed 35 years of service by the time September rolls around in 2024.
