Portugal has announced plans to increase natural gas imports from Nigeria and the United States as part of its strategy to diversify energy sources and reduce reliance on Russian supply. The move aligns with the broader European Union (EU) initiative to secure alternative energy partners amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
In a statement, Portugal’s Minister of Environment and Climate Action emphasized the importance of energy security and the need to foster long-term partnerships with reliable suppliers. “Diversifying our gas supply is crucial for safeguarding our energy needs and ensuring resilience in the face of global uncertainties,” the minister stated.
Nigeria, one of the world’s leading exporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG), is expected to play a pivotal role in Portugal’s diversification efforts. The two countries have historically enjoyed strong trade relations, and this initiative is set to deepen economic ties further. Similarly, the United States, with its significant LNG production capacity, offers Portugal a stable and abundant source of natural gas.

Analysts have welcomed the move, noting that it could help Portugal mitigate risks associated with energy dependency on a single supplier. By expanding its energy portfolio, Portugal aims to stabilize prices and shield its economy from disruptions linked to geopolitical conflicts or supply constraints.
The shift toward Nigerian and US gas imports is also seen as a strategic step toward meeting Portugal’s energy transition goals. The country has been investing in renewable energy and reducing its carbon footprint, with natural gas serving as a bridge fuel in the transition to a greener economy.
However, challenges remain, including securing favorable pricing agreements and ensuring the infrastructure needed to handle increased imports. Experts suggest that Portugal may need to invest in expanding its LNG terminals and storage facilities to accommodate the anticipated rise in shipments.
As Portugal accelerates its plans to diversify energy sources, the development marks a significant shift in the global energy landscape, highlighting the growing importance of strategic alliances in ensuring energy security.
