President Bola Tinubu has called on political stakeholders and the electorate in Ondo State to uphold peace and decorum during the forthcoming gubernatorial election.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu emphasized the importance of ensuring a free and fair electoral process to strengthen Nigeria’s 25 years of democratic governance.
“As Ondo State prepares for its off-cycle governorship election, President Bola Tinubu urges all political stakeholders and the electorate to uphold peace and decorum and fulfil their civic responsibilities without fear before or after the elections,” the statement read.
Tinubu expressed his anticipation for a democratic process that genuinely reflects the will of the people, enabling them to freely choose their leaders.
He commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its diligent preparations, particularly the timely distribution of sensitive materials across the state’s 18 local government areas.
The President also lauded the deployment of security personnel to maintain law and order. He acknowledged the assurances from the Inspector-General of Police and the Chief of Defence Staff that officers would act professionally and adhere to the provisions of the Electoral Act to guarantee a credible electoral process.
Tinubu reminded political stakeholders, particularly candidates, that leadership is a privilege conferred by the people and must be respected.
He urged all parties to avoid actions that could undermine the integrity of the electoral process.
“It is in the best interest of all Nigerians to ensure a free and fair election and consolidate our over 25 years of democratic governance,” Tinubu reiterated.
The Ondo State gubernatorial election is expected to serve as a litmus test for Nigeria’s commitment to democratic principles and electoral integrity.
