The Office of the Presidency has clarified that the N5 billion earmarked for the “Presidential yacht” in the 2023 supplementary budget is, in fact, an Operational Naval boat equipped with specialized security features, intended for high-profile operational purposes rather than leisurely cruising. This revelation came through a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, who serves as the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
In the statement, it is emphasized that the term “Presidential yacht” was used solely for nomenclature purposes to highlight the boat’s exceptional military capabilities, and it is not intended for the personal use of the President. This clarification is made in response to public concerns and misconceptions regarding the nature and purpose of the vessel.
“The so-called ‘Presidential Yacht’ mentioned in the budget is actually an Operational Naval boat designed with specialized security equipment for conducting high-profile operational inspections, and it is not intended for the President’s recreational use. The ‘Presidential yacht’ nomenclature has been chosen to emphasize the vessel’s advanced security features,” the statement affirms.

It is important to note that the concept of a “Presidential yacht” was approved during the previous administration led by President Buhari. The current administration has continued with the project as a testament to the principle of governmental continuity. The decision to maintain this initiative reflects a commitment to strengthening the nation’s maritime security and operational capabilities.
Mr. Onanuga elucidated, “The ‘Presidential yacht’ project was originally approved during the previous administration, and our government upholds the principle of continuity in governance. It should be understood that this vessel is not a new idea but rather a project that has been carried forward from the past administration.”
Additionally, the statement underscores that the funding allocation for the “Presidential yacht” is part of a pre-existing obligation of the Nigerian Navy to the Ministry of Defence. This allocation underscores the President’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the country’s waterways and maritime territories.
As stated in the release, “The request for funding for this boat was included in the obligations submitted by the office of the Chief of Naval Staff to the Ministry of Defence. The total amount of requests submitted exceeded N200 billion, and the President approved N62 billion. President Tinubu remains focused on ensuring the security of our nation and our territorial waters.”
This clarification not only sheds light on the true nature of the “Presidential yacht” but also underscores the continuity of government projects and the commitment to enhancing national security. The vessel, equipped with advanced security features, serves a vital role in safeguarding the country’s waterways and maintaining maritime security, in line with President Tinubu’s dedication to national defense and protection.
