Jeremiah Umaru, a member of the House of Representatives who represents the Akwanga, Wamba, and Nasarawa Eggon Constituency, has voiced his concern on the rise in the number of kidnappings that have occurred in the state of Nasarawa.
During the plenary session on Thursday, Umaru voiced his concern about the current state of security throughout the state.
He bemoaned the fact that the state is increasingly becoming a shelter for armed criminals and kidnappers and pleaded for immediate attention to be paid to finding a solution to the situation.
According to him, the circumstance represents a considerable risk to the personal safety of those living in the state at this time.
Umaru placed the blame for the condition of insecurity in Nasarawa on the widespread infiltration of criminals from neighboring states. He emphasized that if the matter is not addressed, it will have severe repercussions for the state’s economy and for Nigeria’s economy as a whole.
The House of Representatives encouraged the Federal Government to build permanent security formations in the state in the resolution that it passed. This was done so that the state could enjoy increased levels of security.
It is the responsibility of the committees on Defense, Army, Air Force and Police Affairs, as well as the committee on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, to ensure that the resolution is followed.
Several students and prominent citizens of Nasarawa State have been kidnapped in recent years for ransom. This includes the state’s former Deputy Governor, Professor Onje Gye-Wado, and traditional leaders such as Gom Mama, HRH Alhaji Bala Adams Zubairu, and Sarkin Gurku, HRH Alhaji Jibril Mamman Waziri, and his wife, Hajiya Sa’adatu Waziri.
