RIHANNA, who will soon grace the silver screen as cabaret performer Bubble in Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets, has set her sights on more than just summer block busters. Indeed, the Bajan singer has revealed that she would like to join fellow singers Cher and Jennifer Hudson as pop stars who have won acting’s highest accolade: an Oscar.
“I’d love to get there one day,” Rihanna told The Sun on Sunday of her mission to take on larger acting roles. “Who doesn’t want to be told they are doing a great job?”
The singer, who is currently in the headlines for stepping out with a new man, continued: “Any validation that your work is impacting is rewarding. I work hard and put my all into everything I do but the rest isn’t up to me.”
“I don’t think anyone makes an album thinking about winning a Grammy, or makes a movie thinking about winning an Oscar. What you do is work as hard as you can and if awards follow, then that’s great.”
On her role in the upcoming adaptation of the French comic book series Valérian And Laureline, Rihanna alluded to wanting to challenge herself more in future: “It’s pretty difficult to method act when it comes to playing a shape-shifting entertainer but, seriously, I have nothing but respect for the actors that do.
“If you look at the well-known method actors of the generation, they put in incredible performance after incredible performance. It’s no coincidence.
I just do what’s best for the role, what’s best for me, I’d love to do something dark and different and challenge myself.”
With eight Grammys and two Brit Awards already under her belt, there’s no doubt that Rihanna throws herself into everything she puts her name to. “You don’t do diva on film sets,” she said of her firm dedication to acting.
