The Rivers State government has awarded a N30 billion contract for the reconstruction of the Kalabari Road to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, one of Nigeria’s leading construction companies. The project, which is expected to significantly improve transportation in the region, is part of the state government’s broader efforts to enhance infrastructure and promote economic development in the area.
Governor Nyesom Wike, who officiated the contract signing ceremony, emphasized that the Kalabari Road project is crucial for the development of the Kalabari Kingdom and surrounding communities. The road, which links key towns in the area, has long been in need of rehabilitation, and the governor expressed confidence that Julius Berger’s expertise and experience would ensure the successful completion of the project.
The Kalabari Road reconstruction is expected to improve access to the coastal areas of Rivers State, facilitate the movement of goods and services, and boost economic activities in the region. Governor Wike noted that the road will also enhance tourism prospects, as the Kalabari Kingdom is known for its rich cultural heritage and natural resources.

The scope of the project includes the complete overhaul of the existing road infrastructure, with the construction of new bridges, drainage systems, and the improvement of road safety features. The road will also be widened to accommodate increasing traffic and ensure smoother transit for both commuters and commercial vehicles.
Julius Berger has a strong track record in executing large-scale infrastructure projects across Nigeria, and the company’s involvement in this project is expected to bring a high level of technical skill and reliability to the Kalabari Road reconstruction. The project is expected to be completed in phases, with the first phase slated to be delivered within a specific timeframe.
Governor Wike reiterated his administration’s commitment to transforming Rivers State’s infrastructure, particularly in rural and underserved areas. He expressed optimism that the Kalabari Road, once completed, will serve as a critical link to other major roads and contribute to the overall economic growth of the state.
The Rivers State government has prioritized road infrastructure in its development agenda, with several other road projects ongoing across the state. The Kalabari Road is seen as one of the most important infrastructure initiatives, as it will not only improve local mobility but also facilitate trade, agriculture, and access to essential services.
With the award of this N30 billion contract, the Rivers State government is taking a significant step toward improving the road network and enhancing the quality of life for residents of Kalabari and neighboring communities.
