The Rivers State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has formally declared its support for the Interim State Working Committee of the Labour Party in the state, led by Gogo Wellington.
The endorsement was announced on Friday by the Rivers State Chairman of the NLC, Comrade Alex Agwanwor, during a courtesy visit by the Labour Party’s interim executives to the NLC Secretariat in Port Harcourt.

Agwanwor stated that the Interim State Working Committee headed by Wellington remains the only recognised leadership of the Labour Party in Rivers State, stressing that no other group can legitimately claim to be the party’s executive in the state.
“There are people trying to frustrate your efforts, but don’t be distracted. Be focused on your mandate,” Agwanwor said.
“The law which established the state working committee is very clear. No other person can claim the Labour Party in Rivers State other than you. You are the rightful persons to pilot the affairs of the party, and you have our full support,” he added.
Responding, the Chairman of the Interim State Working Committee of the Labour Party, Gogo Wellington, said the visit was aimed at strengthening ties and closing ranks with the NLC as a key stakeholder in the party.
Wellington stressed that the Labour Party is an integral part of the labour movement and remains committed to advancing the ideals upon which it was founded.
“I have always questioned why there was such a wide gap between the Labour Party and the NLC,” he said.
“The NLC is an integral part of the Labour Party, and the party should not exist without a cordial and functional working relationship with the Nigeria Labour Congress,” he added.
He noted that the NLC is well rooted across the 23 local government areas of Rivers State, adding that proper integration would strengthen the party’s grassroots base and promote its vision and ideology.
Wellington further assured the NLC of a strong and cooperative relationship with the new party leadership, disclosing that the party is already working towards restructuring and forming its structures from the state to local government and ward levels.
He said the NLC, the Trade Union Congress, TUC, and other labour-related bodies would be actively involved in the process to ensure efficient and effective formation of party structures.
“We deemed it necessary to assure the NLC that there will be a positive and productive working relationship with this executive,” Wellington said.
“All partner bodies connected to the NLC, TUC and the Labour Party will be integrated to ensure that the restructuring and formation of party structures are efficient and effective,” he added.
