The recent political maneuverings in Rivers State have exposed the deeper strategy behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s (PBAT) actions, revealing a calculated move that has left Nyesom Wike politically weakened.
The Turning Point
On the night PBAT declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, a delegation led by the Senate President visited Wike at his residence. While the purpose of the visit remains unclear, images from the meeting surfaced on social media.

One particular picture stood out—while others appeared in high spirits, Wike looked dejected. This contrast was telling: despite the removal of his perceived enemy, Siminalayi Fubara, Wike did not appear victorious.
The Masterstroke Against Wike
The swearing-in of the administrator, the Attorney-General’s weak justification, the desperate lobbying of Assembly members, and the questionable approval method for the emergency declaration all pointed to a larger scheme. PBAT’s move was not just about removing Fubara; it was a tactical play to dismantle Wike’s stronghold.
While both PBAT and Wike sought control over Rivers State, their end goals differed. Wike aimed to install his loyalist, the Speaker, as governor through impeachment. PBAT, however, had a bigger plan: to render Wike irrelevant, politically and structurally.
A Trap Set and Executed
PBAT allowed Wike to believe he was wielding federal power, subtly pushing him toward self-destruction. Wike’s confidence peaked when the court ruling appeared to clear the path for Fubara’s impeachment. Just when Wike was set to strike, PBAT played his final card—the state of emergency declaration.
This move did not just remove Fubara; it uprooted Wike’s entire political structure. The appointment of an administrator with a military background, directly answering to PBAT, ensured that Wike lost his grip on the state.
The Fall of a Godfather
Wike now finds himself isolated. Having alienated the PDP and become deeply unpopular in Rivers, his last claim to power—the status of political godfather—has been stripped away. The once-powerful figure is now politically vulnerable, left with no clear path forward.
There is an old saying: Before embarking on revenge, dig two graves. Wike, in his arrogance, dug only one, thinking he had buried his enemy. Now, the question remains—where will his own political remains be buried?
PBAT: The True Winner
Ultimately, this was a strategic masterclass by PBAT, who once again proved his expertise in the dark arts of politics. The battle for Rivers was never just about Fubara or Wike—it was about securing control over the economic powerhouse that has historically funded presidential elections. With Wike sidelined, PBAT has ensured that Rivers remains under his direct influence, securing both political and financial dominance.
