The Regional Off-Grid Electricity Access Project (ROGEAP) has partnered with Ecobank to provide training for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the renewable energy sector. The initiative aims to equip entrepreneurs with the knowledge, skills, and financial support needed to scale their businesses and contribute to the growth of sustainable energy solutions across West Africa.
With the increasing demand for clean and affordable energy, SMEs play a critical role in driving innovation and expanding access to renewable power sources. However, many small businesses in the sector face challenges such as limited funding, lack of technical expertise, and regulatory hurdles. The collaboration between ROGEAP and Ecobank seeks to address these barriers by offering specialized training programs, financial literacy workshops, and access to funding opportunities tailored for renewable energy businesses.

ROGEAP, a World Bank-funded initiative implemented by the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), has been at the forefront of promoting off-grid electricity solutions in West Africa. Through this partnership, participating SMEs will receive hands-on training in solar energy technologies, business development strategies, and sustainable energy project management. The goal is to enhance their capacity to deliver efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly energy solutions to communities with limited or no access to the national grid.
Ecobank, as a key financial partner, will provide guidance on securing investment, managing financial risks, and leveraging banking services to support business expansion. The bank’s involvement underscores the importance of integrating financial empowerment with technical training to ensure long-term success for SMEs in the renewable energy space. By offering tailored financial products, including credit facilities and investment advisory services, Ecobank aims to bridge the funding gap that has traditionally hindered the growth of green energy startups.
Industry stakeholders have praised the initiative, emphasizing that empowering SMEs in the renewable sector is essential for addressing energy poverty and achieving sustainable economic development. With Africa’s growing population and increasing energy demands, expanding off-grid solutions through well-trained entrepreneurs is seen as a strategic step toward energy security.
As the training program rolls out, participants will have access to mentorship, networking opportunities, and potential business collaborations with industry leaders. The partnership between ROGEAP and Ecobank is expected to boost innovation in the renewable energy sector while creating jobs and fostering economic growth in the region.
