The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, has stated that Russia cannot be trusted, despite discussions surrounding a proposed 30-day ceasefire to end the war in Ukraine.
Speaking at a news conference in Brussels on Monday, Kallas emphasized that no negotiations are currently taking place because Russia has not engaged in talks.
“The understanding around the table is that Russia can’t really be trusted,” Kallas said. “They will seize this opportunity to present all kinds of demands.”

When asked about the EU’s role in ongoing negotiations, she added, “There’s no negotiation table yet because Russia is not coming to the negotiation table.”
The remarks follow peace talks between U.S. and Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia, which resulted in the ceasefire proposal.
Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday regarding efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
“We want to see if we can bring that war to an end. I’ll be speaking to President Putin on Tuesday,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One during a late-night flight back to Washington from Florida.
