Senegal have appointed ex-captain Aliou Cisse as coach of the senior national team on a four-year contract.
Cisse, 38, and recently coach of the Senegalese Olympic team replaces Frenchman Alain Giresse, who left the post following the Teranga Lions’ dismal performance at the 2015 Orange Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea, where they failed to go past the first round from a group which had Algeria, Ghana and South Africa.
According to the Senegal Football Federation, the performance of Cisse will be evaluated after the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
The former midfielder becomes the first indigenous coach to handle the 2002 World Cup quarter finalists after Amara Traore, who was in charge from 2009 to 2012.
Cisse was a member of the ‘golden generation’ Senegal team that reached the quarters of the FIFA World Cup in 2002 and the final of the Africa Cup of Nations the same year in Mali.
Besides spells with French sides Lille, Sedan, Paris Saint Germain and Nimes, he also had stints with English sides, Birmingham City and Portsmouth during a career that lasted more than a decade.
As coach, he was an assistant to compatriot Joseph Koto during the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
