InfoStride News has reported that SERAP has initiated legal proceedings against President Bola Tinubu, seeking a comprehensive investigation into the disappearance of over $15 billion in oil revenues and N200 billion designated for refinery repairs between 2020 and 2021. This action comes in response to findings from the 2021 oil sector report by the Nigerian Extractives Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI).
In the lawsuit, filed under suit number FHC/L/CS/2334/2023 at the Federal High Court in Lagos, SERAP is requesting an order of mandamus to compel President Tinubu to investigate the allegations of missing oil revenue and unaccounted-for refinery repair funds. Additionally, SERAP is urging President Tinubu to direct relevant anti-corruption agencies to investigate corruption allegations involving the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company Limited, Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NPDC), and State-Owned Enterprises (SOE).
Furthermore, SERAP seeks an order of mandamus to ensure that any recovered proceeds of corruption are utilized to enhance the well-being of Nigerians. The organization argues that addressing these allegations is essential for achieving justice, curbing impunity, and rebuilding public trust, given the severe impact of corruption on economic development and the lives of many Nigerians.

The allegations of corruption highlighted by NEITI’s findings have not only undermined the economic development of the country but have also trapped a significant portion of the Nigerian population in poverty and deprived them of opportunities. Without a thorough investigation into these damning revelations, suspected wrongdoers may continue to evade accountability and enjoy the benefits of their actions, eroding public trust in government at all levels.
SERAP emphasizes that these allegations represent a grave violation of the Nigerian Constitution, national anti-corruption laws, and the country’s obligations under the UN Convention against Corruption. The organization firmly believes that there is a legitimate public interest in ensuring justice and accountability for these serious allegations.
The lawsuit filed by SERAP not only targets President Bola Tinubu but also involves the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, as a respondent. As of now, a hearing date for the case has not been scheduled, but this legal action underscores SERAP’s commitment to pursuing justice, accountability, and the recovery of misappropriated funds for the benefit of the Nigerian people.
