Former Federal lawmaker, Shehu Sani, has cautioned Nigerian women against allowing their husbands to risk their lives over football.
The former lawmaker, a member of the Eighth Assembly, stressed that women have a role to play in preventing their husbands from dying.
This caution comes after at least five Nigerians died while watching the semi-final match between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Bafana Bafana of South Africa in the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote D’Ivoire.

The match, which ended in a tension-soaked victory for the Super Eagles in penalty shootouts, led to tragic deaths, including notable individuals such as Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a corps member serving in Adamawa State identified as Samuel, Deputy Bursar of Kwara State University, Malete, Ayuba Abdullahi, and Mikail Osundiji of Olomoore area, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Sani advised women to take proactive measures, such as turning off the power meter and sabotaging the generator, especially when they are unsure of their husbands’ health status.
He tweeted, “If your husband loves watching football on live TV and you are doubtful about his health status, just turn off the power meter and switch off, and don’t forget to sabotage the generator.”
In response to these tragic incidents, the Super Eagles expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased and observed a minute of silence during their training session. They also prayed for the souls of the victims to find eternal rest.
As the Super Eagles prepare to face the Elephants of Cote D’Ivoire in the final of the tournament on Sunday, Nigerians hope that such tragedies do not recur.
