Popular Nigerian disc jockey, DJ Obi, has come out to say that Skepta deserves more recognition for his contribution to Afrobeats. He recently shared that the British rapper has done more than enough to help Nigerian music cross over internationally.
According to him, Skepta’s efforts have gone a long way towards aiding the promotion of Afrobeats via his collaboration with Wizkid and other Nigerian artists, and his voice on “Ojuelegba remix” helped to shift the global perception of African music.
He added that even though Nigerian singers were already making waves locally, certain foreign allies played a major role in opening the global door, and Skepta is one of those names many forget to recognize.
“Skepta did a lot for Afrobeats. I don’t think we give him his flowers and respect.
When there was need for help to cross over, certain people stood up. And Skepta was one of those people.
He looked around him and reached for whoever was closest to him. Thank God it was Wiz. They did their thing.
When Skepta said, listen to this and do this, it was a no-brainer. Boom. We’re in that room now. Drake is f**king with our sht.”
