A 41-year-old man, Yusuf Akinbiyi was yesterday remanded at the Ikoyi Prisons by an Ebute‑Meta Chief magistrate’s court, for allegedly killing his 86-year-old father, Agboola Akinbiyi.
Akinbiyi, who resides at Madon village, Ijede, Ikorodu, Lagos, faces a one‑count charge of murder.
The crime was committed on May 21 at about 11.05 p.m. at the deceased’s residence, according to the prosecutor, Inspector Frank Inah.
Inah said the deceased and the accused lived together, adding that the deceased had provided for the accused as he had no job.
“The accused wanted to sell his father’s land to enable him travel out of the country, but his father held on to the documents.
“The accused and the deceased had an argument during which the accused beat the deceased with his hands and covered his mouth and nostrils with pillow,” said Inah, who added that this made the accused’s father to suffocate to death.
Akinbiyi was later arrested by the Police.
Inah said the body of the deceased had been deposited at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital mortuary for autopsy.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The magistrate, Miss A.O. Komolafe, who rejected the accused’s plea, ordered that he be remanded in prison custody pending legal advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions.
Komolafe adjourned the case till August 11 for mention.
