Alhaji Abbas Njiddah Tafida, son of the Emir of Muri, has clinched the ticket as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Yoro/Jalingo/Zing federal constituency in the upcoming by-election in Taraba State.
The emergence of Tafida as the consensus candidate was announced on Tuesday after he secured victory in the party’s primary held at the Jolly Nyame Stadium in Jalingo, the state capital.
In a surprising turn of events, six other candidates withdrew from the contest just moments before the election commenced, clearing the path for Tafida’s victory.

Among those who stepped aside were Bello Yero, former Permanent Secretary of the Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs; Saleh Sa’ad, Chairman of the Taraba State Parliamentary Committee; Hassan Bappa, former Commissioner of Youth and Sport; Abdullahi Baba; and Leah Solomon.
The Electoral Committee, headed by Alhaji Mohammed Danlami, announced that out of 96 accredited delegates, 95 cast their votes in favor of Tafida.
As the PDP flagbearer, Tafida is now poised to challenge Aminu Ibrahim Malle of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other candidates from different political parties in the by-election slated for February 3, 2024.
