Sunday Asefon, the former president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), was recently appointed as the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Students Engagements, and student leaders around the country have voiced their opinions on the appointment.
The nomination was announced in a letter from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation dated October 31, 2023, as confirmed by InfoStride News.
Student leaders under the umbrella of The G7 released a statement to the media on Saturday in response, calling his appointment “a round peg in a round hole.”

Former Special Assistant on Students Affairs to Former Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State, Olusegun Clement, released a statement saying that Tinubu had made the right choice in selecting Asefon to represent him in his interactions with Nigerian students.
Clement claims that Asefon’s track record as the previous NANS President is proof that he will fulfill his duties as president.
The student leader told Tinubu that students across the nation will do everything to assist his government thereafter.
We’ve heard that Comrade Sunday Asefon, the outgoing president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), has been named the top student official in Nigeria’s government.
Students and young people in Nigeria have regained faith in Mr. Tinubu’s administration as a result of this. We see this as Mr. President’s demonstration of his grasp of the concept of “Putting a round peg in a round hole.”
I know Mr. Asefon personally and respect him for his years of service as president of NANS, so I have no doubt that he will do an excellent job in his new position.
Chief Clement and other student leaders in Nigeria sent a joint statement to the president in which they “expressed their joy” and “assured that our structures across the country will do everything possible to support your government henceforth.”
