Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Rules and Business, Hon. Tanimu Sam-Tsokwa, has argued that Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal cannot be impeached should he decide to finally dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for All Progressives Congress.
Sam-Tsokwa, who argued this point in a chat with reporters in Abuja yesterday, said the positions of speaker and deputy speaker were not created to be an exclusive preserve of any political party in the House, adding that any member could occupy the offices if elected by majority of the members.
Tambuwal is believed to be bidding his time before he eventually cross-carpets to the APC, which he has been publicly flirting with in recent times. He, however, maintains that he is still a member of the ruling PDP and has not defected.
Sam-Tsokwa said: “There is no such rule and to the best of my knowledge, the speaker has not joined APC. I am not aware that there is any move to impeach him.
“The House is entitled by the constitution and the rule to elect a speaker. So, once you are a member of the House, you are qualified to be the speaker of the House”.
When contacted on the matter, Tambuwal’s spokesman, Malam Imam Imam, declined comments.
