Manchester United legend, Gary Neville has come out to say that Erik ten Hag is not responsible for the Red Devils’ excessive spending on Antony. He recently had his say while speaking to the press, and fans have been reacting.
According to him, the Glazers are to blame for going into panic mode to sign Antony from Ajax after the club lost scandalously to Brighton and Brentford.

Neville added that the owners should be blamed for complete lack of leadership which has led to poor signings in recent years.
His words, “Context on Antony. We’d just lost to Brighton and Brentford and the club was in reactive panic mode as per usual and sanctioned and said “Yes” to Casemiro and Antony . It’s all on the Glazers for complete panic and lack of leadership! They’ve done this for 10 years. CR7 to City and panic. Alexis to City and panic. Ajax couldn’t believe we’d offered that money. Owners and Directors sanction deals. Now I agree Antony needs to do better but it was never a deal to do in those circumstances.”
WOW.
Antony Matheus dos Santos (born 24 February 2000), simply known as Antony, is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays as a winger for Premier League club Manchester United and the Brazil national team.
Antony graduated from the São Paulo academy and made his senior debut for the club in 2018. He moved abroad to Ajax in the summer of 2020, where he won two Eredivisie titles and one KNVB Cup during his two seasons. Antony’s performances in the Netherlands led to a transfer worth €95 million (£82 million) to Manchester United, the highest sum paid for an Eredivisie player.
Antony was born in Osasco, São Paulo, Brazil, and grew up in Inferninho, a favela far from the city centre. Growing up, he would play football wherever he could on the streets or in his house, combining his love of futsal with street football and regularly attending São Paulo matches with his aunt. He is of Portuguese descent.
