A banner calling for the exit of Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward will be flown over Turf Moor next month, according to multiple reports.
Man United fans have reportedly hired a plane to fly the banner reading “Ed Out – LUHG” (Love United, Hate Glazer) on Sept. 2 before their match against Burnley in protest of Woodward’s leadership and of the club’s owners the Glazer family.
Supporters had planned to have the banner flown over Old Trafford for Monday’s match against Tottenham, according to the reports, but that idea was scrapped because of light restrictions for the 8 p.m. kickoff time in Manchester.
During David Moyes’ time in charge at United, supporters famously commissioned a banner in March of 2014 that read: “Wrong One – Moyes Out.”
The reports come on the heels of United’s embarrassing loss to Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday and Woodward’s failure to deliver a centre-back for Mourinho during the summer transfer window.
The start to United’s season has been marred by friction between manager Jose Mourinho and midfielder Paul Pogba and has seen former players including Gary Neville suggest that Woodward had been “half-hearted” in his support of the Portuguese boss.
United missed out on summer targets Harry Maguire and Toby Alderweireld and saw a suspect defence exposed in the loss to Brighton.
Neville was also critical of Woodward’s behaviour after the 3-2 defeat at the Amex Stadium on Sunday. He was seen grimacing at full-time and Neville says it looks, from the outside at least, that there is “angst” between Mourinho and the board.
“The CEO sat in his spot for two minutes after the game on Sunday in what I can only describe as something I don’t want to see the CEO of Manchester United do,” Neville added. “At the end of the game, stand up, go and shake the opposition CEO’s hand, tell him well done and that you’ll see him later in the season, smile and be bigger than anything.
