Enugu State is on edge after three people were allegedly killed during protests in the Coal City metropolis.
According to Infostride News, merchants flocked to the streets early Wednesday to protest the State government’s decision to close businesses that did not operate on Monday.
However, according to reports, violence broke out during the rally, resulting in the deaths of at least three people.
Two teenage men and a woman are seen dead on video.
It was reported that security personnel were called in to disperse the demonstrators. However, it is not known who actually opened fire.
In a statement released to the media, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Enugu State Command, said that everything have returned to normal.
The vendors’ peaceful protest, according to the police spokeswoman, was violently disrupted.
Ndukwe stated, “Normalcy has been restored at Ogbete Market Enugu and its surroundings,” following reports of protest by some traders over the sealing of their shops by the State Government and their attempt to coerce others, whose shops were not sealed, to close theirs and the entire market.
The rally, which started out peacefully, was turned violent by outside forces.
Citizens and market vendors alike have been urged to maintain lawful, peaceful, and cooperative behavior and to communicate their complaints through proper channels.
The Commissioner of Police has ordered a thorough investigation, and any new information, particularly about the reported number of casualties, will be relayed to you as quickly as possible.
