President Bola Tinubu has unveiled plans by the Federal Government to address Nigeria’s power challenges by injecting an additional 500 million standard cubic feet of gas into the domestic market.
This initiative, announced during the inauguration of critical gas infrastructure projects in Imo and Delta States, aims to enhance industrialization, create jobs, and bolster energy supply.
The move comes in response to previous nationwide blackouts triggered by gas shortages, which crippled power generation and distribution. With power generation plummeting below 2,500MW due to unpaid debts to gas companies, the government’s intervention seeks to revitalize the energy sector and mitigate future disruptions.

The newly inaugurated gas infrastructure projects include the AHL Gas Processing Plant 2, the ANOH Gas Processing Plant, and the ANOH to Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) Custody Transfer Metering Station Gas Pipeline. These initiatives are poised to significantly increase domestic gas supply, supporting power generation and accelerating industrialization.
President Tinubu reiterated the government’s commitment to leveraging Nigeria’s abundant gas resources to drive economic growth and industrial development. He emphasized the importance of initiatives such as the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative in transitioning towards cleaner energy alternatives.
The commissioning of these projects aligns with the Federal Government’s Decade of Gas initiative and underscores its dedication to eliminating gas flaring while promoting industrialization. The government aims to improve the ease of doing business in the oil and gas sector, fostering a conducive environment for investment and growth.
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, applauded the president’s leadership in championing gas utilization as a transition fuel towards clean energy. He highlighted the ministry’s commitment to promoting clean energy efficiency and security as part of Nigeria’s long-term energy strategy.
Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), commended the government’s support for strategic gas projects aimed at enhancing energy security and driving industrialization. He reassured stakeholders of NNPCL’s commitment to maintaining energy security through further gas infrastructure development.
The inauguration of these critical gas infrastructure projects marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey towards energy security and economic prosperity. With increased gas supply, the nation is poised to overcome power challenges, stimulate industrial growth, and create job opportunities for its citizens.
