Infostride News has learned that President Tinubu has greenlit a substantial 50% discount on road transport fares nationwide, effective from December 21, 2023, to January 4, 2024. The announcement came through the Minister of Solid Mineral Development, Dele Alake, during a press briefing at the state house.
According to Alake, this decision aligns with President Tinubu’s commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians, especially during the festive season. Alake, who also chairs the Inter-ministerial Committee on Presidential Intervention, shared the details of the initiative alongside three other committee members: Alhaji Mohammed Idris (Minister of Information and National Orientation), Saidu Alkali (Minister of Transportation), and Bayo Onanuga (Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy).
The focus of this initiative is specifically on the masses planning to travel and reunite with their loved ones during the holiday season. The approved discount will be applicable for a two-week period, from Thursday, December 21, to January 4, 2024.

Alake conveyed President Tinubu’s sentiments, stating, “In the spirit of Christmas and demonstration of his love for Nigerians, he feels the federal government should intervene to bring down the costs of public transportation to allow persons who want to travel to visit their loved ones.”
He further explained the specifics of the discount, saying, “Beginning from tomorrow, a special discounted holiday season fare on road transport and zero-fare by rail across Nigeria” will be implemented. This means that Nigerians can enjoy a 50% reduction in the cost of public transportation via minibuses and luxury buses. Additionally, all train services on applicable routes will be available at zero cost for the duration of the holiday season.
The special presidential intervention is set to commence on Thursday, December 21, and will conclude on January 4, 2024. The Ministry of Transportation, in collaboration with transporters, road transport unions, and the Nigerian Railway Corporation, will work seamlessly to ensure the successful implementation of this initiative.
Alake highlighted the geographical scope of the discounted travel fares, stating, “From tomorrow, Nigerians wishing to embark on inter-state travel to any part of the country from Abuja, Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Owerri, Ibadan, Akure, Maiduguri, Sokoto, and other major inter-state transportation hubs will be able to do so at half the cost.”
This move by President Tinubu’s administration reflects a proactive effort to alleviate the financial burden on citizens during a time traditionally associated with increased travel and family gatherings. The discounted fares aim to facilitate easier movement for Nigerians, fostering a sense of unity and celebration during the holiday season.
Infostride News will continue to monitor and provide updates on any developments related to President Tinubu’s initiatives and their impact on the well-being of the Nigerian populace.
