Kabiru Gaya of the All Progressives Congress, APC, had filed a petition challenging the election of Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, as the senator for Kano South.
This petition was dismissed by the National and State House of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal.
Justice R.O. Odogu presided over the panel that rejected Gaya’s plea and upheld Sumaila’s election.

The tribunal “affirmed the declaration of Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila of NNPP as winner of the Kano South Senatorial District election held on 25th February 2023,” finding no basis for the challenge.
In addition, Sumaila was granted costs of N200,000 against Gaya.
