Minister of Works and Housing, David Umahi, has praised the progress made on the reconstruction of the Lagos-Calabar Highway, one of Nigeria’s most critical road networks. The project, which aims to improve transportation efficiency and foster economic growth, has seen substantial work completed, despite the challenges posed by the scale of the infrastructure development.
Umahi, who recently inspected the ongoing work along the highway, highlighted the significant strides made in key sections of the road, particularly in the southern and southeastern regions. He noted that construction teams have been working diligently to ensure that the highway, which stretches across several states, is not only rehabilitated but expanded to accommodate increasing traffic and reduce congestion.
The Lagos-Calabar Highway serves as a crucial link between the economic hub of Lagos and the southeastern parts of Nigeria, facilitating the movement of goods and services, as well as passenger traffic. Given its importance, the federal government has prioritized its reconstruction as part of its broader infrastructure development agenda.

Umahi emphasized that the project is critical for enhancing regional connectivity, boosting trade, and improving the overall economic landscape of the country. With the road’s rehabilitation, travel times are expected to be reduced, and businesses will be able to operate more efficiently, helping to attract both domestic and foreign investment in the affected regions.
The minister also acknowledged the challenges faced in executing the project, including difficult terrain, weather conditions, and the need for coordination among various stakeholders. However, he expressed confidence that the completion of the road would significantly improve the transportation network and contribute to national economic development.
In his remarks, Umahi encouraged the contractors and relevant agencies to continue their focus on quality and timely delivery, ensuring that the road meets the required standards and is completed within the set timelines. He also reiterated the government’s commitment to providing the necessary support to ensure the success of the project.
The Lagos-Calabar Highway is a vital artery for the Nigerian economy, connecting major commercial centers, ports, and agricultural hubs. Once completed, the road is expected to enhance logistics, reduce transportation costs, and improve accessibility for communities along its route.
The completion of this project will also align with the federal government’s broader initiative to improve the nation’s road infrastructure, thus fostering economic growth, job creation, and regional development. As work continues, all eyes will be on the final delivery of the highway, which promises to be a major milestone in Nigeria’s infrastructural transformation.
